The scope and level of automation of web guiding systems differ from application to apllication. Regardless of this, every guiding system can be reduced to the principle of the simple closed control circuit.

Web edge guiding:
Guiding to the left or right web edge using one edge sensor.

Web center-line guiding:
Guiding to the web center-line using two edge sensors.

Contrast guiding:
Guiding to a continuous or interrupted printed line or contrast edge.

The starting point is the current position of the web of material.

One or more sensors scan the actual position of the web and transmit this information to the commander.

The commander compares the actual position measured to the specified desired value. If there is a difference it transmits a correction signal to the guiding device.

The guiding device corrects the position of the web of material precisely and without any apparent delay.
The type of guiding is dependent on the degree of web processing. Untreated webs can only be guided to the web edge, as there are no other contrasting characteristics available. Finished webs, on the other hand, offer more possibilities, for instance printed lines or other freely selectable contrasts. The scanning of the web position is made using analogue or digital sensors.
